Our event was held at Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal, Sunset lounge on September 22, 2016 11am-1pm. It began with a presentation of colors, flag salute, and national anthem by the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May. Invocation and the benediction was done by Rev. Deb Moore, a member of CVAC. A delicious brunch and a remarkable and very moving afternoon were had by all. Awards were presented by Michael Francis on behalf of Congressman Frank LoBiondo; Freeholder Gerry Thornton and Freeholder Marie Hayes; and by Senator Jeff Van Drew, Assemblymen Bob Andrzejczak and R. Bruce Land.
Johnnie Walker, Chair of CVAC, explained why the individuals/groups were honored: 2016 award honorees for their significant donations to the needs of veterans were Burke Motor Group; Elks of Greater Wildwood; The American Legion Post 331; and the father and son team, Charles and Nate Hoerr, who spend countless hours collecting and delivering goods to veterans.
Carol Cohen, chair of the event, presented a surprise 1st Annual Award for the Volunteer of the Year to Johnnie Walker. It was the first time many saw Johnnie speechless. It was an honor for all to be present for the emotional and inspirational experience shared with our local Veterans, Veteran supporters, and other awardees.
Cape Regional Health System was the primary sponsor of the event and their table was filled with volunteers from the hospital who are veterans or who have children who are veterans. Visiting Angels, Genesis, and Complete Care were also sponsors.
